Concealer on the Cheap!

You can call me a frugalista or a recessionista, but when it comes down to it, I’m just cheap. No, not cheap. Savvy. I consider myself a savvy shopper, and honestly, I rarely feel like I’m wasting money.

When it comes to makeup, I save and splurge here and there to get the most out of my dollar while getting the best products I can afford. However much I love it, makeup is always a gamble for me! When I find something that works, I cherish it. Especially if it’s cheap. Which leads me to today’s lesson: con. ceal. er. CONCEALER.

I decided to do a drugstore run earlier this week and set out to find a kick-ass concealer. I am strictly MAC-loyal, but I just haven’t had good luck with their concealers. I also didn’t want to buy a $40 tube of foundation just to use it under my eyes. So, when I went to my local, fully stocked CVS, I found L’Oreál’s True Match Super Blendable Concealer FOR $7.99! I knew it would be perfect, because I knew I was looking for the following three things:

1. Light, Creamy consistency - the thicker the concealer, the more obvious it’s going to be on your skin and settle into your fine lines (not to mention the higher possibility of skin irritation and acne). I wanted something light, creamy, and not in a pot. Why? In my experience, the pots either dry out or melt anyway. Plus, creams are easier to apply with a brush - I like my brushes. I don’t like those stupid doe-foot applicators that they use in everything. The doe-foot never has enough product on it! This concealer has a mini-brush inside, so when I’m in a rush I can apply it straight from the tube.

2. Ingredients - I have a good idea of what belongs on my skin and what doesn’t. The under-eye area is a really fragile area, and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t putting anything on my face that could be harmful. I also needed it to be moisturizing, because dried out undereyes are about as attractive as dry heels and cankles. True Match is packed with humectants and emollients, so it’s a very moisturizing concealer.

And, most importantly, 3. The Perfect Color Match.

Finding the perfect color is the most important part of finding a concealer. If the color is wrong, you could draw attention to whatever you were trying to conceal instead of hiding it. Color matching is especially hard for girls with darker skin! Too many products are pink-toned, or do not come in dark enough colors. A perfect match in undertone makes a big difference! I was looking for a yellow-toned concealer for my under-eye area, which always looks tired for some reason. This does the trick and brightens me up, plus it looks really smooth under my eyes.

When picking a color, the general rule is to go one shade lighter for undereye concealer.

By the way, your hand is not the same color as your face! Don’t try products on your hand thinking it will look the same on your face. Hands are generally darker.
